This lack of transparency and openness is always the result of sin. The first effect of the first sin was to make Adam and Eve hide from God behind the trees of the garden. They who had been so transparent with God and with one another were hiding from God, because of sin; and if they hid from God, you can be quite sure that they soon began to hide from one another. There were reactions and thoughts in Adam’s heart that he never allowed Eve to know, and there were like things hidden in Eve’s heart too.

“For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

John 3:20-21 (ESV)
